Kristine Opolais stars as Cio-Cio-San in the Wiener Staatsoper’s timeless production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, September 8, 12 & 14. Piero Pretti sings Lt. Pinkerton, with Bongiwe Nakani as Suzuki and Boaz Daniel as Sharpless for these performances, conducted by Philippe Augin. The September 14 engagement will also receive a live broadcast via Staatsoper Live.
Cio-Cio-San is a signature role for Ms. Opolais, whose past portrayals of the doomed heroine have been heralded by audiences and critics alike:
“{Her} voluptuous, expressive voice soared over Puccini’s dense orchestration…” (The New York Times)
“In “Madama Butterfly,” Opolais sang with so much passion and emotion that it was hard to contain the applause. The intensity that Opolais brings to each of her heroines is incomparable and she continued to show why she is the leading Puccini singer in the world.” (Latin Post)
