Kristine Opolais’ triumphant performance as Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème (2014) will be featured as one of The Metropolitan Opera’s 2016 summer HD encore broadcasts, on July 13. Ms. Opolais stepped in to substitute for an ill colleague, and in doing so she made Met Opera history as the first artist to debut two roles on the Met stage in less than 24 hours, as she performed Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly the evening prior.
The cast for the encore broadcast includes Vittorio Grigolo as Rodolfo, Susanna Phillips as Musetta, and Massimo Cavaletti sings Marcello. A video preview of this season’s cinema encores is available via YouTube, and free audio previews are available via the Metropolitan Opera online.
Kristine’s unforgettable portrayal of Mimì was heralded by audiences and critics alike:
“ . . . so remarkable and complete was Kristine Opolais’s performance both vocally and dramatically . . . She is a compelling stage presence with a near-perfect combination of reticence and sensuality that works splendidly for Mimì whose superficial modesty only barely disguises her deep inner desires.”
