On June 28, Kristine Opolais and pianist Agnese Eglina appear in recital at The Shanghai Oriental Art Center, performing a diverse program of art song and operatic favorites. Known for its five interconnected hemispherical halls or “petals,” which are shaped to resemble a butterfly orchid from above, the Art Center is one of the leading performance and cultural facilities in Shanghai.
This richly evocative recital program journeys through the emotional landscapes of Romantic and early 20th-century music. Highlights include Puccini’s poignant “Un bel dì vedremo” from Madama Butterfly and Catalani’s soaring “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana” from La Wally, alongside Rachmaninoff’s lush Preludes and the tender art song “How Fair This Spot.” Richard Strauss’s expressive “Cäcilie” and “Intermezzo” are paired with Korngold’s haunting “Marietta’s Lied” from Die tote Stadt. Tchaikovsky contributes both vocal and piano gems, and the program closes with Dvořák’s “Song to the Moon” from his opera, Rusalka, a signature role for the soprano.
